Kaan Ünal (b. 1999, Istanbul) is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice explores perception, ambiguity, transformation, and the relationships between conditions. He graduated from the Department of Art Education at Marmara University in 2022 and completed his master’s degree in Visual Arts Education at the same university in 2025. His early musical training forms a foundation for his current practice, in which he translates sound and vibration into visual and spatial languages.
In his early practice, Ünal worked with traditional media such as painting, sculpture, mosaic, and stained glass, engaging with psychological, archetypal, and mythological imagery. Over time, his practice has evolved toward a more distilled, relational language open to ambiguity.
At the center of his current work is the question of how entities or forces change when they encounter one another. Bringing together sound, vibration, light, image, and various materials, Ünal often creates conditions in which transformation can occur rather than producing predetermined forms. The physical effects of sound on water, wire, or wax; the transformation of images through translucent surfaces; and the relationships that different materials develop over time are different manifestations of this approach.
Ünal explores the traces left by the ephemeral, the threshold between the visible and the concealed, and the space between control and chance. Rather than treating ambiguity as something to be resolved, he approaches it as a generative space in which perception and meaning can be reconfigured. His works therefore resist definitive answers, inviting viewers to remain within the space between seeing, knowing, and making meaning.
