People often define themselves through the relationships they form with others. Beginning with family, this journey transforms into a long search in which the individual tries to understand their place in the world. The questions "Who am I?" and "Where do I stand?" are not merely a personal quest for identity — they are a starting point from which the meaning of life and the nature of one's relationships are questioned. In this context, the field of interaction established between the individual and their surroundings represents a process through which a person attempts to understand both themselves and the whole to which they belong.
The relationships formed within this context are most often shaped through communication, and communication is typically conceived through language. Yet many interactions between people occur before words. Tone of voice, vibration, or rhythm gives these interactions their character. In such an encounter, sound becomes not merely a carrier of meaning but a form of contact established between subjects. Spreading as a vibration, sound forms a new relationship at every point it reaches. Sound is not only heard — it transforms everything it touches, becoming a way of perceiving the world together.
Kaan Ünal's exhibition titled Reflections approaches sound through its relational quality. The artist's sound-based kinetic sculptures and installations make the physical vibrations of sound visible. Vibrations produced through microphones, loudspeakers, and various mechanical components interact with materials such as water, rope, metal, and glass to generate movement. In this way, sound becomes a force that leaves a trace in space.
The artist's practice gradually evolves from the dramatic and interior imagery of his early period toward an increasingly spare and relational language. A production process that began with classical techniques shifts over time toward the physical nature of sound, and through Ünal's knowledge of music and experience with materials, it develops into a practice that renders the movement of vibrations within space visible.
The works in the exhibition approach the forms of communication that the individual establishes with themselves, with others, and with their surroundings from different stages. The process extending from inner reverberations to mutual dialogue, from individual voices to collective rhythms, suggests that communication is not a singular event but a continuously transforming network of relationships. In some works, the viewer's voice is directly incorporated into the functioning of the piece. The work thus ceases to be a fixed object and becomes a relational field reconstituted with each new encounter.
The Reflections exhibition offers a collective experiential space in which the boundaries between the individual and their surroundings become permeable, and every contact finds a new echo in space. Here, neither sound nor movement is singular — each is shaped by the presence of the other, and at every surface it reaches, it produces a new reflection. This process serves as a reminder that the human being is not a closed structure isolated from the external world, but rather an entity entangled with everything it touches. Individuality here is not a state of solitude, but the sum of all the relationships formed, all the sounds heard, and all the traces left in space. The network of interaction that Kaan Ünal has constructed goes beyond being a technical apparatus — it creates a concrete space of encounter in which viewers become aware of their own existence and their place within the whole.
